The R ladder
The circular R ladder indicates the degree of circularity. The higher up the R ladder, the more resources are saved. Zwartwoud looks at which of the 6 steps of the R ladder we can operate on.
The R ladder
The R ladder consists of 6 steps:
R1: Refuse and Rethink
Refrain from products or use products more intensively. We ask the question: is this product or material really necessary? We think critically and come up with alternative solutions.
R2. Reduce
Manufacture products more efficiently or make them more efficient in use. This way, we use fewer raw materials during production and use.
Zwartwoud operates as high as possible on the R ladder.
R3. Re-use
We reuse a product when possible. We give a second life to as many products as possible.
R4. Repair, Refurbish, Remanufacture and Repurpose
We repair and modernize products to make them look like new again. We make new products from old products and thus give them a new function.
Logic takes you from A to B, but imagination takes you everywhere. This is also the case with circularity.
R5. Recycling
Processing and reusing materials. We process materials into raw materials to ensure that nothing has to disappear into the incinerator.
R6. Recover
Recovering energy from materials. Ideally, we use this step of the R ladder as little as possible.
