A day in the life of a project manager

A day in the life of a project manager: Tim Riksman talks about his work at Zwartwoud.

Plenty to do

“A day in the life of a project manager? They are very different! I usually start the day by reviewing my emails. Then I'll pack up my to do list, which lists what needs to be arranged for each day. That can be anything: from registering transport, to calling the entrepreneur what time we'll arrive, check drawings, or, for example, purchasing. I also have a lot of meetings with colleagues, I monitor the schedule, I make sure the billing is in order... One day can be very different from the other; it depends on where you sit and what job you are doing.

“Note: people live here for the job!”

I've been a project manager at Zwartwoud for almost a year now. Before that, I had been working at Zwartwoud as a project assistant for a while. At the moment, I am the project manager of Primera, for which we renovate an average of about 12 stores per year. In addition, I do some small projects.

As project manager, you monitor the project from start to finish, working closely with all colleagues. When asked to renovate a store, we make a request for a quote. As project manager, you will measure and check the quotes and drawings. Once the order has actually been received, I will continue to work: arrange everything with suppliers, production, assembly; for that, I make the entire schedule. This is how I ensure the most efficient planning possible in terms of time.

When I started as a project assistant at Zwartwoud, I quickly found out that project manager would be the position that would suit me best. In my personal life, I am also clear about making agreements; I am very much on the schedule. I find it difficult when someone does not keep their agreements. In addition, I am quite direct and I treat everyone equally: whether I need to discuss something with the director or someone from the editing team, I address them in the same way. I like to say what I think or what I think. And that comes in handy for me in this position.

What I like most about my work as a project manager is the diversity: that you come into contact with different people. Primera is a franchise, so I meet very different types of entrepreneurs. I like being around people and doing something beautiful, together.

“What I like most about working as a project manager is the diversity.”

The work atmosphere and work culture at Zwartwoud really attract me. Everyone is equal and if you ask someone something, they are always willing to help you. Everyone is ready to lend a helping hand, even if the request for help may not quite suit the person's job. You just get a lot in return.

I also feel the space here to do what I do in a day myself. They don't look closely at whether you're at work, you just have to make sure you have things in order and then they trust you to do what it takes. And we are business together when we have to, but there is certainly room for fun here and there.

I think that working at Zwartwoud is very good for your development. You get a lot of space to grow. You can go in any direction within this company: from design to realization. If your current position does not seem to be quite right for you or you would prefer to go in a different direction, we will always look at the opportunities within the company with you.

In addition, there is always room for your opinion and/or feedback: you are taken seriously here. We look at what you can do and how your strength can best be used.

But remember: you have to be really interested in interior design if you want to work here: the people who work here all love to create something beautiful and are all really proud of it. People live here for the job!”
